Europaeum Bertelsmann Visiting ChairA new visiting chair, the Bertelsmann Foundation Europaeum Visiting Professorship in Jewish History and Politics has been established from autumn 2000, based at Mansfield College, Oxford, with generous support from the Bertelsmann Foundation. It will be awarded each year to a distinguished scholar in the field who will be required to deliver a series of lectures and seminars, including at least one major Europaeum Lecture. Professor Avashi Margalit, Schulman Professor of Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, delivered the 2001 lectures on the theme of Betrayal and Trust.Other Visiting Chairs A number of other visiting chairs, notably at Oxford, are linked to the Europaeum association. Thus, Professor Umberto Eco of Bologna University was appointed by the University of Oxford to the post of Weidenfeld Visiting Professor of European Comparative Literature, and delivered a series of eight lectures in Oxford on Translating and Being Translated from March to June 2002. The post holder for 2003 will be Professor Nike Wagner, from Vienna, on themes related to theatre and psychoanalysis. |
