General information

This one-year programme will be divided into trimesters, with the first trimester of teaching at Leiden, the second at the Université Paris I - Panthéon Sorbonne and the third at the University of Oxford. In each part of the programme, candidates will select modules from a comprehensive range of topics, and will thus be able to tailor the course to their specific interests and requirements. Themes covered during the academic year are:

  • Introduction to the History of States and Nations in Europe
  • Historiographical Methodology
  • Structures of Power and European Civilisation
  • State-formation and ideologies, c. 1400 – c. 2000

The working language will be English.

ImageLodgings will be provided on-campus at each university, including membership to a historic Oxford College.

Fees

EU Students: €4,883/£3,315/$5,816; Non-EU Students: €14,639/£10,000/$17,437. (Tuition charges approximate: exchange rates vary.)

Requirements

  • Prospective candidates should, in principle, be persons hoping to make a (academic) career at the highest level, where knowledge of comparative European history and civilisation is important.
  • They must have completed an undergraduate degree (BA or European equivalent), from a recognised institution of higher education with a good class or grade standard.

Application Procedure

  • Candidates must submit a completed Application Form
  • Successful applicants must demonstrate, by written statement and/or in an interview, that they have the background, professional and academic interests fitting the goals of the present programme.
  • Applications should include two letters of recommendation from academic staff members; a personal statement of motivation to participate in the MA course; two examples of written academic work (in English) and a brief synopsis of the thesis proposal, which can be subject to revision and development.
  • In addition, participants are expected to possess a thorough proficiency in written and spoken English (IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 570/230 for non-native English speakers).
