The Double Helix of Terrorism and Tyranny: can civil liberties survive the war on terror? ![]() European Court of Human Rights AJF Auditorium, 132 rue de Lausanne 11th March, 2008 18.30-20.00 Speaker: Professor Vaughan Lowe Vaughan Lowe is Chichele Professor of Public International Law, and a Fellow of All Souls College, in the University of Oxford. He was formerly Reader in International Law in the University of Cambridge; and before that he taught at the universities of Cardiff and Manchester and, as a visiting professor, in the USA. He practices in the field of international law as a barrister from Essex Court Chambers, London, and has appeared in cases before the English courts, international arbitral tribunals, the European Court of Human Rights, the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights, the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea, and the International Court of Justice. He has been a member of arbitral tribunals constituted under the UN Law of the Sea Convention and NAFTA. He writes extensively on matters of international law.
Teacher's Workshop: Following the lecture by Professor Vaughan Lowe, a special workshop has been arranged with EUROCLIO (the Standing Conference of European History Teachers Associations). This innovative workshop will bring together history teachers from secondary and higher education institutions.

Connecting History Education in Europe The Europaeum and EUROCLIO have been awarded a grant by the European Union Education and Culture DG 'Europe for Citizens' Programme to hold a series of events and workshops across Europe on the theme "Human rights in Europe? Tolerance, Democracy, Citizenship, Critical thinking and Multiperspectivity as European Values" during the 2007-8 academic year.The Europaeum will organise 10 events, including conferences, seminars, and lectures, at each of its partner universities on topics related to this theme. Each event will be followed by a workshop organised by EUROCLIO, comprising of secondary and higher education professionals and academics. |
