This debate sets out to chart Europe's role in a changing, globalised, world, with questions including: Will the West be back on track after Bush? Is Europe ready for the rising East? How should Europe manage its new East? Can Europe face down a growling Russian bear? How divided is Europe over Turkey?

Speakers:
The Chancellor, Rt Hon Lord Patten of Barnes, CH

Lord Patten is the Chancellor of the Universities of Oxford and Newcastle, and Co-Chair of the International Crisis Group. Former Governor of Hong Kong (1993-1997), overseeing the return of Hong Kong to China, and European Commissioner for External Relations (1999-2004). He is a bestselling author of East and West (1999) and Not Quite the Diplomat (2005).

Peter Mandelson, European Commissioner for Trade

Peter Mandelson is the current British Commissioner of the European Union for Trade. Before taking this post, he was a British Labour politician, and served as Member of Parliament for Hartlepool for twelve years.
