Ninth World Shakespeare Congress took place in Prague from 17 to 22 July 2011

Ninth World Shakespeare Congress was held in Prague from 17 to 22 July 2011. The general theme was “Renaissance Shakespeare: Shakespeare Renaissances”. The congress was organized by the International Shakespeare Association, Charles University and the National Theatre. The Congress was attended by 600 Shakespeare scholars, Elizabethan literature and theatre specialists from all continents. Their lectures and papers were presented in 26 panels, 38 seminar sessions and six workshops. The plenary lectures, including those of Professor Martin Hilský, MBE, the first translator of the entire work of Shakespeare into Czech, and Professor Stanley Wells, CBE, The Chairman of the Trustees of Shakespeare’s Birthplace, culminated by the conversation between Václav Havel and Tom Stoppard, OM and CBE, on “Shakespeare and Political Change” moderated by Michael Žantovský, the Czech ambassador to the Court of St James’s.
