The Rise and Fall of Communism
The Europaeum is keen to take a full part in debating the aftermath and fall out from the 20th anniversaries surrounding the Fall of the Berlin wall and end of Communism - especially with our colleagues in Krakow and Prague. Now, coinciding with certainly the beginning of the end of Soviet Communism - Professor Archie Brown, Emeritus Professor of Politics at Oxford and Emeritus Fellow of St Antony's College, has produced a book on The Rise and Fall of Communism (Bodley Head, 2009).
OXFORD: Celebrating the birth of Isaiah Berlin
Wolfson College is celebrating the centenary of the birth of their founding president, Sir Isaiah Berlin. Amongst other activities, there are two special exhibitions at the College running from 5-17th June.
In the Private Dining Rooms, an exhibition entitled Images of Isaiah, consisting of photographs taken throughout his life, photographs of his family, and some affectionate caricatures, will be on display; as well as a selection of key documents from his personal papers includes sections on his historic meeting with Anna Akhmatova in 1945.
BOLOGNA: Postgraduate networking in Italy
The Alma Laurea Foundation is an innovative service that provides on-line curricula for recently graduated students, and is a meeting point between the University and the business world. Alma Laurea is run by a consortium of Italian universities with the support of the Ministry of Education, University and Research. It is aimed at being a reference point for everyone who deals at different levels with issues like academic studies, employment and youth conditions.
LEIDEN: Upcoming conference on ideological discourses
The University of Leiden is organising an international conference on Ideological Discourses in the Latin Literature of the Early Modern Age to be held in November 2009. Voltaire Foundation
The Voltaire Foundation is a research department of the University of Oxford, publishing works on the 18th Century, especially the French Enlightenment, located alongside the Europaeum-Secretariat in central Oxford on Banbury Road!
Oxford-Geneva Bursary
The Europaeum selects two students for the Oxford-Geneva study bursaries each year. One supports an Oxford graduate student to pursue a programme of study at The Graduate Institute, Geneva, and one to support a Geneva student to study at Oxford during the coming academic year. The 2008 Geneva bursary winner was Ms Fiona Le Diraison, who conducted research at the Refugee Studies Centre, Oxford, examining the application of the ‘national security exception’ within the UK, as part of a wider study on refugee status during the ‘War on Terror’.

Graduate Research Workshops
Europaeum Internships
The Europaeum offers internships to doctoral or post-doctoral scholars from Europaeum universities throughout the year. We are committed to providing engaging and fruitful work experience - with opportunity to pursue research studies in Oxford libraries, join lectures etc. In this way, we seek to extend the mission of the Europaeum to build European leadership, foster diversity and provide opportunities to supplement research and background education.
2009 Classics Colloquium
The theme for the eighth Europaeum Classics Colloquium will be Teaching, Teachers and Students. This theme will include Greek education and attitudes; sophistry and philosophy; pedagogy; didacticism; Roman education and attitudes; and literary depictions of teaching and learning.
Summer School
The 2009 Summer School will take place in Paris in early September, looking at how ethics does – or should – influence European policy-making in a range of fields: Economics, Politics, the Law and Social Policy. As usual, three graduates from each of the 10 Europaeum universities are selected, with all costs apart from travel covered by the Europaeum.
