The Europaeum regularly seeks to collaborate with specialist units in delivering its mission and activities. These are some regular partner bodies:

Institute of Political Studies, Catholic University of Portugal

Since its foundation in 1996-97, the Institute has gathered together most of the best Portuguese senior scholars and professionals in Political Science and International Relations, Security and Defence. Its MA and PhD Programmes have aimed at fostering an international atmosphere where longing for knowledge and the excitement of ideas are open to all - provided one is prepared to work hard and engage in the critical examination of diff erent lines of argument, tested by experience.

El Pomar Foundation

El Pomar Foundation was established in 1937 by Spencer and Julie Penrose to enhance, encourage and promote the current and future well being of the people of Colorado through grantmaking and community stewardship. Based in Colorado Springs, El Pomar Foundation is one of the largest and oldest private foundations in the Rocky Mountain West, with assets totaling more than $550 million. El Pomar contributes over $25 million annually through grants and community stewardship programs to support nonprofit organizations involved in health, human services, education, arts and humanities, and civic and community initiatives.

EUROCLIO, the Standing Conference of European History Teachers Associations

EUROCLIO, the European Standing Conference of History Teachers´ Associations, was established in 1993 to defend and promote history teaching as an essential subject in the education of young people. Among the initial objectives were the strengthening of the position of history in the school curriculum, defending the intellectual freedom of teachers and encouraging the development of a greater European awareness through the study of history without neglecting global, regional and national dimensions.

Member Associations can be found in Albania, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Israel, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Rumania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tadzhikistan, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the United States.

Oxford Institute of European and Comparative Law

In the formative years of its existence the Institute (formerly the Centre for the Advanced Study of European and Comparative Law) received financial support from funds raised under the auspices of the Europaeum, as well as German, French, Italian and Dutch Governments, and from public and private companies. It now has some 12 members of permanent or visiting staff; is involved in running a four-year undergraduate course, BA in Law with Law Studies in Europe, which takes students to Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands; and it is heavily engaged in teaching Community and Comparative Law courses. The current director is Professor Stefan Vogenauer.

Prague Jean Monnet Centre for European Studies

Charles University founded its Centre for European Studies in 2000 at its Institute of International Studies, under the directorship of Professor Lenka Rovná. Charles University was the first institution in Central and Eastern Europe to gain this distinction. In addition to organizing lectures, seminars and workshops, the Centre runs a journal Intergrace, hosts the Czech European Community Studies Association, and runs a training programme in EU matters for Czech officials and civil servants.

Pierre Renouvin Institute, Paris

The Pierre Renouvin Institute was founded in 1983 and operates as five research centres, each with its own distinct research area and seminars. The Centres focus upon the history of contemporary Central Europe, the history of Slavic countries, North-American history, the history of Latin America and the Iberian world, and the history of contemporary International Relations. The Institute federates its work by sharing expertise in international relations, organising a Diplome d’etudes approfondies of history of foreign worlds and international relations, and publishing the Bulletin of the Institute Pierre Renouvin. The current Director is Professor Bernard Michel, who took over from Professor Robert Frank.

Oxford Modern European History Research Centre

The MEHRC was established to sustain and enhance the study of post-medieval Europe, a central concern of such Oxford scholars as Alan Bullock, Raymond Carr, Richard Cobb, John Elliott, Michael Howard, Denis Mack Smith, Hugh Trevor- Roper and Theodore Zeldin, supported by rich and diverse library and archival Modern History Faculty resources. The MEHRC runs graduate programmes and promotes fruitful contacts with Oxford colleagues at other universities, especially through the Europaeum. The Centre, which enjoys active support of more than 30 members of staff within and beyond the History Faculty, manages a two-year M.Phil course in Modern European History. It provides funding and facilities to academic visitors, post-doctoral fellows, graduate assistants and bids for support for large research ventures. It is a partner in the Europaeum MA in European History & Civilisation.

European Studies Centre, Oxford

The European Studies Centre at St Antony’s College has launched a series of special events to mark its 30th year in 2006. It was founded with a generous grant from the Volkswagen Foundation and is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of Europe, with particular strengths in History, Politics, and International Relations. The centre also serves to bring together economists, sociologists, social anthropologists and students of culture. The Centre is a meeting place for the whole Oxford community interested in European Studies. Beside its permanent Fellows, the Centre hosts Visiting Fellows and research students, and runs seminars and workshops on European topics. The director is Professor Kalypso Nicolaïdis, taking over from Professor Timothy Garton Ash.

Oxford Internet Institute

The Oxford Internet Institute (OII) is a multidisciplinary academic centre focused on furthering understanding of the economic, political, institutional, scientific, legal and other social factors shaping the Internet and its implications for society. From its inception in 2001, the OII’s vision has been anchored in the broad conception of the Internet established by the foresight of its initial sponsors, The Shirley Foundation, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), and the University of Oxford. The OII views the Internet as a phenomenon that goes far beyond its basic technical capabilities. Wide-ranging collaborative relationships with experts from academe, government, business, and industry in the UK and around the world play a central role in the Centre’s strategic drive. The current director is Professor William Dutton.

Bonn Centre for Religion and Society

The Center for Religion and Society (Zentrum für Religion und Gesellschaft - ZERG) was established at Bonn in 2005 as a multi-disciplinary Institute of Advanced Study including Theology, Oriental studies, comparative study of religion (Religionswissenschaft), sociology of religion, education, political science, law etc. It will support a joint research project entitled Religious Interaction, dealing with encounters between Judaism, Christianity and Islam, and run two MA programmes entitled Master of Ecumenical Theology and Master of Interreligious Studies from 2006-7. The current director is Professor Wolfram Kinzig.

The Weidenfeld Institute for Strategic Dialogue

The Weidenfeld Institute for Strategic Dialogue, orginially called the Club of Three, was founded in the mid-1990s by Lord Weidenfeld and Michael Maclay to promote the discussion of matters of common concern to the peoples of the United Kingdom, Germany and France, bringing together leading figures from business, politics, journalism, academic life and representatives of the professions and civil society from the UK, France and Germany. The Club of Three is concerned with a range of subjects, including: European Enlargement, defence, welfare, foreign languages, women and the workplace, constitutions and federalism, and health policy. The Club of Three is a project of the Trialogue Educational Trust. The current Executive Director is Sasha Havlicek.

Network for European Studies, Helsinki

The Network for European Studies was founded in 2002 to reinforce and coordinate the study of European issues within all faculties and disciplines of the University. The multidisciplinary orientation of European Studies is its defining feature. Helsinki supports European studies issues with good research and study conditions and promotes interaction with key actors of Finnish politics and society. The Network aims to coordinate this study into larger units and to strengthen its visibility. The network is directed by Dr Teija Tiilikainen ( ).

Institute of European Studies, Krakow

The Institute of European Studies, established in 1993, is an interdisciplinary unit of the Jagiellonian University. In addition to independent research and consulting projects, the Centre offers Masters degrees in European Studies in both English and Polish, with individual study offered at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. The Institute also sponsors conferences, public lectures and discussions, including the European Meeting series with Polish politicians. The director is Professor Zdzislaw Mach.

History and Politics Department, Bologna

Created in 1986, the Dipartimento di Organizzazione e Sistema Politico’s (DOSP) research has two focuses: the comparative study of political institutions, and the study of organizational behavior, enhanced by solid international connections linking DOSP scholars with several European and North American centres. DOSP supports highly regarded PhD programmes in political science. It is currently directed by Professor Francesca Zannotti and previously by Tiziano Bonazzi.
